What does weed do to your body and brain?

What weed does to your body or brain depends on how you consume it and the cannabinoids you are using. For example, the effects of smoking weed onset quicker but generally have a less intense effect than if you ingest edibles. Cannabinoids also dictate the effect weed has on your body because different active ingredients have different outcomes.

The two main active ingredients found in marijuana are CBD and THC. THC is the intoxicating part of the plant and is what allows people to feel the sensation of being high. In addition, it can benefit your body in various ways by reducing pain, nausea, and insomnia, and increasing your appetite.

CBD, on the other hand, is the non-intoxicating part of the plant. People that consume CBD generally want to feel the medicinal benefits of weed without getting high. CBD has been utilized to treat more serious problems such as epilepsy and anxiety, proving the positive benefits that weed can have on the body. Ultimately, as with any drug, weed can have both positive and negative effects on the body.

Below is a list of some of the effects weed can have on your body and brain:

Negative effects:

  • Short-term memory loss
  • Long-term memory loss
  • Slower reaction times
  • Impaired judgment

What type of drug is weed?

Weed can be classified under three different types of drug, because of the wide range of effects it can have. The three categories that weed falls under are depressant, hallucinogenic, and stimulant.

H3: Weed as a depressant

Weed can be a depressant, which means it slows down the signals sent from your body to your brain cells. If you are taking weed as a depressant, you will likely feel sleepy and relaxed, but might also feel dizzy. Individuals who use weed as a depressant often do so to calm social anxiety, which is regularly the case with students. However, it can also inhibit memory processing, which can affect academic performance.

H3: Weed as a hallucinogenic

When you hear about drugs having an adverse effect on your cognitive function, it is usually hallucinogenic drugs that people refer to. Whilst a single joint of a non-potent strain of recreational cannabis will not cause hallucinogenic effects, if you take a large amount of the drug, particularly in edible form, you are more likely to experience delusions.

H3: Weed as a stimulant

Weed can also be used as a stimulant. This makes people feel better, which is why many use it to treat mental illnesses such as depression. Overall, it is important to remember that everyone reacts to weed in different ways, so marijuana users cannot guarantee that the drug will affect them in a specific way. You need to be smart about your weed intake and understand your limits to reap the benefits of marijuana.

Can weed make you smarter?

There is a lot of information online about the possibility that weed can make you smarter. There are elements of research that suggest it does, and elements that claim it destroys your cognitive abilities. In order to help you decipher the information about the correlation between smoking marijuana and cognitive benefits, we separate the myths from the reality.

H3: The myths

Unfortunately, there is a lot of information that wrongly suggests that weed makes you dumb. This simply is not true. The main reason this rhetoric is spread is due to the 2012 Dunedin study. The study tracked over 1,00 people from birth until the age of 38.

Through cognitive tests, their executive functions were tested at various intervals throughout that 38-year period. The overall findings suggest that individuals who smoked weed got lower grades and could not retain information. These findings have since been used by anti-drug campaigners who seek to eliminate the presence of drugs in society, which is a leading reason why the myth that weed makes you dumb has been thriving.

However, there were a lot of flaws in that study, which cast a shadow of doubt on the findings. The study blamed marijuana for 100% of the educational problems identified, not taking into account the socioeconomic status, other drug use or presence of mental illness. It is therefore virtually impossible to blame marijuana use for the altercation of the brain's capacity to learn based on this research study.

H3: The reality

Despite anti-drug campaigners and poorly run studies suggesting that weed limits your brain power, it is not true. Although it makes no claim to improve your intelligence, it does nothing to inhibit it. In fact, multiple studies have been run which bring zero validity to the claim that weed makes you dumb. There is no difference in brain capacity between regular cannabis users and those who abstain from consuming marijuana.

In fact, there is a case to be made that weed can improve your cognitive abilities. Although it does not do anything to alter your brain chemistry and transform you into a smarter person, the positive side effects of CBD can lead to improved educational success. Since CBD has calming effects, it is often used to help people concentrate when preparing for tests and or to calm social anxiety.
